I was born to be a creative. I was born to make and design. My father took me under his wing as soon as I was old enough to know not to stick the markers in my mouth. I grew up wanting to show my dad I could be just like him. He is no longer living but I sense he is always around whispering in my ear extra inspiration for my latest piece. I have a little of my mom's creativity in me too. I have to work at my writing but when I find the right words it is because of her.
I achieved both a BFA with a concentration in painting at Kutztown University of PA (2004) and an MFA at the University of Delaware (2007). My master thesis contained painting, drawing, sculpture, photo, video and performance to explore the sport of rock climbing as an art form.
I am an adventurer at heart and so I will not be tied down to just one medium to express my creativity. The medium changes depending on the subject matter. Portraits tend to be expressed using charcoal, pastel or graphite on paper while abstractions will come to life in oil or acrylic paintings. My passion for creating designs utilizes a base pencil sketch that is scanned and converted into a digital file to be refined in, procreate, photoshop, and illustrator. My background as a photographer is a useful realm to document potential ideas as well as catalog the art.
Most of my latest work is created upon request for a commissioned piece. I find a beauty in collaborating with others to finding the solution to their vision. I am passionate about commemorating persons, pets, moments I may have experienced while enjoying a few of my outdoor passions with my love, Dustin (trail running, rock climbing and mountain biking) as well as observing my two children, Graeme and Zoey grow up. Our pets have all passed and have been commemorated in drawings (Hueco and Font the Australian Cattle Dogs, Holly the Shaffordshire Terrier and Henry our American Shorthaired tiger cat.)
The most influential artist in my life is my father though my kids are also very creative and inspire me to keep making things everyday. Through my father's work, that reflected the time of impressionism, cubism and abstraction, I have grown an appreciation and become inspired to create in those styles as well. I prefer an expressive mark to high realism though I have the skill, meticulousness, and patience to translate a photograph down to the fine line of a whisker if desired.
Above all I keep creating and making because it is inside me to do so. I have not come close to exhausting my abilities, my talents, my creative spirit.
